The Ghana Athletics Association and Nestle Ghana have jointly launched the biggest grassroots sports development programme in the country which is expected to benefit over 200, 000 school children.

The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Hon. Joseph Yammin launched the 4-year programme amidst pump and pageantry at the Tennis Court of the Accra Sports stadium on Friday 22nd November.

Hon. Yammin cut loose a couple of balloons amidst the sounding of the horn by a platoon of the Ghana Police Service to signify the official take off the country’s first ever National Athletics programme aimed at Elementary Schools.

Pupils from the University of Ghana Basic School gave a brief demonstration of the Kids Athletics programme, engaging in small-aside games involving throwing, hurdling, sprinting and jumping to cheers and admiration by an enthusiastic audience.

The 4-year development programme aims to encourage school children aged 7 – 12 years to develop positive physical, health and social skills by engaging in sporting activities while, at the same time, enhancing the development of future athletes.

An estimated 200,000 pupils are expected to benefit from it and over 500 instructors and coaches will be trained over the period.

The occasion was well attended by all the major stakeholders including the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Joseph Yammin, a Deputy Minister of Education (Pre Tertiary) Hon. Alex Kyeremeh, the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Madame Alice Attipoe and a Director of Physical Education at the Ghana Education Service, Mr. Bernard Annan.

Speaking at the event, the President of the Ghana Athletics Association, Prof. Francis Dodoo expressed his appreciation to many stakeholders particularly Nestle and two former national athletes, Ernest Obeng and Dr. Marc Dzradosi, for the roles they played in bringing the programme to fruition.

He also dwelled on the positives the programme will bring to athletics and sports in general in Ghana.

“Encouraging children to participate in sport is something that can only enhance the quality of their lives.”

“Not only will the next generation of national champions emerge from this program, but sports will enrich their lives by making them live both longer and more disciplined lives; the benefits of sports for work and life are widely documented.

“And, of course, athletics is the most fundamental of sports: running, throwing, jumping!”

Meanwhile, Nestle became the major sponsor of the world wide programme in 2005 as part of its commitment to Nutrition, Health and Wellness.

Ghana and Nigeria are so far the only countries in the Central and West Africa Region implementing the programme.
