ESSIEN NOT GUARANTEE PLAYING TIME-MOURINHO

Chelsea manager has insisted that Michael Essien is not guaranteed playing time at the club following reports of Essien’s imminent departure from Stamford Bridge.

Essien has made only four appearances for the Blues in the English Premier League this term. He came on as a substitute in Chelsea’s 3:0 victory over Southampton on Wednesday.

But the former Lyon midfielder is set to leave London for another club when the January transfer window opens, according to his agent, Fabien Piveteau.

Asked about Essien’s future at the club, Mourinho said, “I offer nobody – not Michael, not nobody [guaranteed playing time].”
The Portuguese manager stressed that Essien’s loyalties must first be with the club.

“I understand that players think about national team, the World Cup and playing regularly, but my players have to think of the team before the players. Michael knows that perfectly.”

Meanwhile, Michael Essien was involved both on and off the field as Chelsea beat Southampton on New Year’s Day. The helped calm the nerves of a disgruntled Juan Mata following his substitution in the game before making an 84 minute appearance late on in the game.

Essien has played 6 matches overall for the Blues this season.
